Guilty (Viewing) Pleasures

This month let’s talk about guilty viewing pleasures.

I admit, I have a lot of these – some I’m really afraid to admit own, but if you go first, I might. But, here are two of my favorites.

First, I love the Hallmark Channel. (Okay, this should surprise no one.) I record all the movies, and some are delightful, some are just okay; pretty much like books. However, I
love their original series. I haven’t found one yet that I didn’t like. Currently, I’m watching the second season of Chesapeake Shores.  This is a heart-warming, multi-generational story, with two main characters who were high school sweethearts who went their separate ways, and now, years later, find each other again.

Second chance romances are my favorites. You can see that in my books. Of my eight romances, four are second chance stories. (Once A Wife, Where the Heart Is, Loving Lindsey, and Running for Cover). And even in my suspense novels, Blind Run, the main characters were once married. For me, there’s just something compelling about exploring why relationships fall apart—or explode—despite a couple’s love for each other. And then, when they come back together at a later time, how they reconcile and deal with their past. (Hmmm. Maybe I should start a second chance series. What do you think?)

Anyway, Chesapeake Shores really appeals to me – oh, and did I mention the eye-candy?

Two other Hallmark series that I enjoyed this year are The Good Witch – just delightful – and When Calls the Heart basically, a historical romance that is just a pure pleasure to watch. If you haven’t seen them, check them out on Netflix.

My second guilty pleasure is dance reality shows. In particular, I love, love, love “So You Think You Can Dance.” The contestants are all young, very talented dancers, and some of them are just amazing. I’m blown away by the amount of work and dedication these young people have put into becoming such outstanding dancers.

This year, the format is a bit different and it’s proving really good. Each of the top ten competitors is teamed with an all-star dancer for the show. It is so good. My favorite so far: Robert and Taylor. Take a look at this video from Week #1. They are the couple to beat.

Okay, so what are your guilty watching pleasures? Are they the same or different from mine. Can you get me hooked on something else?

As I said in my newsletter, post here and be entered in a raffle to win a $25 Gift Certificate to Amazon, iBooks, Nook, or Kobo. (Your choice.) Good luck!

Enjoy the rest of your summer.   Pat

My guilty pleasures are knitting and crocheting and reading. I would love to win an Amazon gift card do I can buy more books.

  2. Robert Grieco says:

My guilty pleasure is binge watching reruns of Breaking Bad.
I believe this is somewhat different from what you enjoy,
    however, you did ask. 🙂

    • Pat Keelyn says:

I loved Breaking Bad . . . remember, I also write suspense . . . and I’ve been thinking about rewatching the entire series. Of course, if I rewatch everything I want, I may not have time to write.

  3. Andrea Stoeckel says:

My new one has just started. “The Orville”, a parade of every Star Trek show ever invented. My old one, when we got SPIKE was “Ink Master”. Not so much for the participants, but the art. I will still binge watch just about every tattoo show out there. And I don’t HAVE a tattoo on me.

Two weeks ’till new TV season…and Jeopardy just started it’s new season 😊

And Pat, I’m not sure about The Good Witch series. The movies seem like they are about a whole different family than the show

    • Pat Keelyn says:

I didn’t realize there were The Good Witch movies, Andrea. More than one? Also, I just saw the listing for The Orville and was planning on grabbing it on my DVR.

  4. Jackie says:

My most guilty viewing pleasure is. 24- Legacy with Keifer Sutherland. Just love that guy. Also enjoyed Vampire Diaries until they stopped it. Damon and Stefan wow.

  5. Molli Vandehey-Taylor says:

so, i have a penchant for really bad teen shows, though i am nearly 40. i love the angst and keeping up with the trends. i’m terrible. i tend to binge watch. my latest was pretty little liars. oh, lord, was that show bad!

    • Pat Keelyn says:

LOL!!! Mollie. That’s why we call then “guilty” pleasures. Okay, since you admitted to this, I admit to watching the Bachelor series. I know . . . embarrassing.

  6. Lee Broom says:

My guilty pleasure is binge watching Desperate Housewives on Hulu. I love every crazy, dramatic moment…and I don’t know what I’ll do when I run out of seasons. I also adore Hallmark. I love the Hallmark movies and mysteries channel, with Lori Loughlin doing the Garage Sale Mysteries, Alison Sweeney’s Bake Shop Mysteries and Candace Cameron Bure’s Aurora Teagarden mysteries. I can’t stop watching all of them! My reading has suffered a bit, since I’ve been able to dvr the Hallmark Movies.

    • Pat Keelyn says:

Oh, I understand the reading suffering . . . but I’m trying to let go of some of my binge watching. I never got into Desperate Housewives, but the Hallmark Mystery series are on my list.

  7. Audrey Stewart says:

I love The good Witch! But I do enjoy the housewives from BravoTV. My favorite show now is Project Runway.

    • Pat Keelyn says:

I went through a Project Runway addiction . . . then I got tired of it. But who knows, I may start it again after I take a break.

  8. peggy clayton says:

Love the Hallmark channel and Cheasapeake Shorers is so darned good! I also love all of those So you think you can dance, americas got talent and the one Jennifer Lopez had. I love the movies on the Hallmark channel also. There was another series on the Hallmark Channel that i really liked a few years ago and it got cancelled but yes we had to have the package on the Dish that had that station. Peggy Clayton [email protected]

    • Pat Keelyn says:

Was that Cedar Cove, Peggy? It took place on the west coast — off the coast of Washington State. The main character was a judge? If so, I loved that series and was really disappointed when they cancelled it.

  9. Tameaka Looney says:

I’m sure this is not a romance to everyone else but I love watching The Flash. I just finished binge watching it on Netflix and I can’t wait for season 4 in October. Iris and Barry have a love that’s so sweet and innocent. Barry has been in love with Iris since they were kids and he finally gets up the nerve to tell her once their older but they get separated by things beyond their control. No better love story than that. Hopefully in the next season they can reunite.

  10. Terry Poage says:

I love watching the Investigation Discovery channel. Every show I watch on there is good. Even though they are real cases it’s good to see a happy ending or they catch the killer to give the family some peace. I use to love watching Vampire Diaries but its over now. I hate when a series ends. I also like watching Dancing with the Stars. It’s a great show and they dance so good.

    • Pat Keelyn says:

Terry, what shows do you watch on Investigation Discovery? I’m not familiar with that. And yes, Dancing with the Stars. it’s such a ‘feel-good’ show.

  11. Cheryl says:

My guilty viewing pleasures are teen dramas. Haha. I got sucked in to Pretty Little Liars, even though some of the content was admittedly a little trashy. I confess, I also watched the Vampire Diaries for a while. Most of these shows start off with a really good hook, and then the writing declines and they get trashy, which I hate. It must be hard to write for an ongoing series. Oh, and I also got into When Calls the Heart, on Netflix, but that’s not really a “guilty” pleasure as much as an “eating crow” pleasure. I assumed by the title I would roll my eyes and hate it, but I found it really charming and fun. I’m looking forward to the next season.

    • Pat Keelyn says:

Cheryl, I agree with the teen dramas. They often start good and then go downhill. I started watching Switched at Birth, and was enjoying it, then it got . . . I don’t know . . . too odd. LOL!! And yes, yes, yes, on When Calls the Heart. As you said, it’s charming. A feel-good show.

  12. JODIE CHAMBERLAIN says:

On Tuesdays me and my grandchildren love to curl up together and watch NCIS bull and NCIS New Orleans it’s our favorite show to watch together

    • Pat Keelyn says:

That’s really great that you watch these shows with your grandkids. I assume they’re not “little” kids.

  13. Daryl Boyle says:

I love Hallmark movies, and Supernatural.

  14. Daryl Boyle says:

    Hallmark and Supernatural

  15. Carol A Green says:

My guilty viewing pleasures- Good witch, anything Christmas especially Rudolph, true crimer shows. I’m an investigation discovery addict!

  16. Lisa Harness says:

The NCIS shows and similar shows. Hallmark movies, if I had Hallmark.

    • Pat Keelyn says:

You know, I’ve never seen any of the NCIS shows, but I should. Maybe I can find them on Netflix. Which one should I start with?

  17. Armenia Fox says:

I don’t watch TV much because I’m always reading, but I do have a few favorites.

My daughter loves watching Glee, and I’ve become a fan. This summer we started from the beginning episode and binge watched them on Netflix. Just love all those old songs they bring back with a fresh arrangement. Got far as Season 3.

My next indulgence is watching Outlander. Love, love that series and I was able to record 3 seasons but cut out Starz as we downgraded our service. I’ll have to catch up on that viewing pleasure sometime down the road.

Thanks again for offering a great prize to your subscribers. I enjoy reading your books when the billionaire/zombie/vampires/shifter worlds get too crazy.

  18. Teresa Christianson says:

My guilty pleasures are also watching the Hallmark Channel and I can’t wait for Good Witch and When Calls The Heart to return. I also love the Christmas shows they have in November and December. Another guilty pleasure I have is watching A&E’s LivePD on the weekends.

  19. Linda Szymoniak says:

I don’t typically watch “reality” shows, but I’m with you on this one. I’ve watched every season of So You Think You Can Dance since the season Benji won (and which gave us Travis). My daughters all took dance when they were younger, and my youngest actually was on track to become a professional dancer. (She fell in love with cars – and the guys that come with them – and scrapped dance for that, unfortunately.) I still can’t get enough of this show. I had last season’s episodes saved on my DVR and hadn’t watched them, since I heard some negative things about the whole using kids thing, but I finally marathoned through those and was quite surprised. Some of them were amazing for their ages. I’m not sure I like the format they’re using this season, but do have my favorite dancers picked and just hope one of them wins!

  20. Joye says:

I never miss these 2 programs-LONGMIRE and SUITS those are the best on t v.
I don’t like the reality shows or what passes as comedy these days.

  21. Amy Mullins says:

My guilty pleasure as well is Hallmark movies. No particular one but I like them. But I would have to say my #1 guilty pleasure is Gilmore Girls. I love this show. I have watched them countless times and will still turn to them if I see them on tv. I am also currently watching them on Netflix

  22. MJ Symmonds says:

My newest guilty watching pleasure is Glee. I swore I wouldn’t watch it years ago when it came out but being off work for a bad shoulder I decided to check it out. OMG I’m hooked!! I also never miss Hell’s Kitchen. I love how crass Gordon Ramsey is & get a thrill listening to him yell at the contestants.

  23. Phylis Collins says:

    Hi Pat
I love to watch Hallmarks Christmas shows.

  24. Mary Preston says:

Hi, my most recent guilty pleasure is buying yarn. I have a huge stash of it in my craft cupboard but I can’t seem to pass up buying more. I think it’s the colors or the texture or ….

  25. Lori R says:

Mine are going to sound like yours. I don’t watch a lot of tv but I love Hallmark movies and I am watching Chesapeake Shores too. I love that book series. I also liked Cedar Cove. I am also looking forward to Passionflix starting next week. It is a movie subscription that is featuring romance books. It looks like it should be good. 😊

  26. Rob Grey says:

If dance shows are your thing than I hope you didn’t miss America’s Best Dance Crew while it was on. If you missed it, I suggest you look it up because SYTYCD and the rest of the dance shows featured quite a few winners from previous seasons. If something new is what you want, The Ozarks with Jason Bateman & Laura Linney has been ABSOLUTELY fantastic and COMPLETELY addicting. That’s on Netflix and it’s sooo good that if you don’t have Netflix, I’d gladly give you my password to check it out! Enjoy and have fun on vacation. Talk when you get back!

  27. Halley Dillman says:

Your pictures are gorgeous! Thank you for entering me in the drawing.

  28. Jackie Wisherd says:

I love Dancing With The Stars and Suits. My must see shows.

  29. Teresa says:

I love When Calls The Heart! I thought maybe I was the only one who knew about it, and I only found it on Netflix a couple of years ago. Another one I found on Netflix is Blindspot. I kind of like the eye candy on that one, though I wish he’d think with his brain more in his personal life.

  30. Edwina Bailey Brown says:

I love watching old tv series from my childhood and two of my favorite that I don’t admit to any of my friends are Batman with Adam West and Green Hornet. My major attraction to the Green Hornet show is Bruce Lee. I couldn’t care less about the show’s star.

  31. Julie Parrish says:

Im hooked on the A&E channel….I love watching The First 48 hrs to see how they try solving the crimes. The History Channel is another favorite of mine!

  32. Scarlett says:

I love to watch Food shows – pretty much anything that comes on the Food Network. When I’m cooking I always aspire to be to the levels of Bobby Flay, but Chopped is probably my favorite show on that channel. My DVR is full of shows from Food Network & the Cooking Channel.

Other TV shows that I could watch again & again are Friends, Supernatural, and The Big Bang Theory.

  33. Amanda Schwarzenberger says:

I have WAY too many guilty pleasures to list. TV shows geared towards audiences much younger than myself is probably at the top. Thanks for the chance.

My guilty viewing pleasure is Outlander! I LOVED the books and am loving the series!

    • Pat Keelyn says:

I loved the book, Gina, but for some reason I could get into the series. I really don’t know why because, as I said, the book was great.

  37. Victoria K says:

Speaking of Guilty Pleasures. Okay, I admit it, I love painting by numbers. I have absolutely no artistic talent, but I love the process. It’s like a coloring book for grown ups. Anyone else?
